Wartime Woes
A Heronsgate Historian has a secure knowledge of the periods studied and how they fit together chronologically. They pose historical questions and investigate these, selecting and evaluating relevant sources to draw conclusions and gain an informed perspective on their world.
From Cradle to School - EYFS
In Nursery, we introduce history by using personal and familiar items as primary sources to explore the concept of change. We engage children by looking at family photographs (e.g., of older relatives) and reading books about key life stages, such as being a baby or the process of toilet training. Additionally, playing with baby dolls helps children connect the information from the books and photos with their own development and the passage of time, making history relevant and understandable.
High Seas Histories - KS1
In Year 2, as part of our History topic Ocean Explorers, we looked at images of different objects that were used by explorers many years ago and some that are still used today. We looked at them closely and discussed what we thought they were called and what they may have been used for!
Lacing-Up to Scout Wars Past - LKS2
The image shows evidence of a Year 4 children using a primary photographic source to analyse the past. The students used immersive techniques to explore the life of a child in World War One, specifically as a guide or scout helping wounded soldiers in the temporary hospital at Charlton House. By acting out the scenario and recording detailed notes, the children were able to make a direct comparison between the lives of children then and now.
A Proper-Gander at Child Evacuation - UKS2
In Year 6, students looked at different sources focusing on the evacuation of children during WW2. They discussed how the use of propaganda can influence how people feel about things e.g. sending their children to the countryside and also influences our perception of events in the past.
