Harmonic Herons

Children focus their musical learning on a composer and a piece of music. They listen to and analyse the music and they given the opportunity to compose in the style of that composer creating melodies, ostinatos and experimenting with rhythm and timbre.

Counting to Perfect-Fifths - EYFS

In EYFS, children have been learning to count to 5 through song. This has focused on the ‘Five Little Peas’ song. They have focused on singing in tune and in time with each other.

Un-Ravel-ling Music Composition - KS1

In Year 2, as part of our music curriculum, we explored the music of Ravel, with a particular focus on Bolero. We listened carefully to the piece of music and drew the different rhythms that we could hear. Then we created our own composition in the style of Bolero.

The Colour in Sounds - LKS2

In Year 3, children have been learning about the music of contemporary composer Cassie Kinoshi. We studied her piece ‘The colour of all things constant’. Children studied the structure of the piece, composing their own ostinatos and melodies. They looked at the dynamics, timbre and thought about the repetition of the phrases they had composed. These were then performed.

Sounds Out of this World - UKS2

In Autumn 1, Year 5 learned about the composer Gustav Holst. They focused on the piece of music ‘Mars’ from the suite called ‘The Planets’, and learned some of the key ostinatos. They then worked in groups to create a composition that built on this understanding, in keeping with the time signature and tone of the music.
