John Henry Smythe QC MBE

In the lead up to VE Day, 6AG had the privilege of speaking with the son of John Henry Smythe QC MBE. The session allowed our pupils to revisit their learning about WWII and their research into Black British airmen and women of which Mr Smythe was one. His son, Eddy, spoke about the historical context that made John's participation in WWII as an RAF navigator and flight officer an impressive achievement at the time. Later, we learned about his experiences as a prisoner of war in Germany and his role in supporting the Windrush generation settling in Britain. We thank John Henry Smythe for his service and thank Eddy Smythe for keeping his father's story alive to share with generations to come.
