Scientific Solutions
Children have been using their scientific enquiry skills when carrying out investigations. They have been able to make appropriate predictions and conclusions based on their given enquiry.
Digging Into Science - EYFS
In Reception the children have been planting seeds and observing what will happen to them over time. They were encouraged to predict what would happen first, drawing on their own experiences. The children then had the opportunity to see what happened to the seed over time and were encouraged to develop scientific vocabulary, such as shoot, root etc. They were able to conclude that the seed had developed into a plant.
Soaking Up the Facts - KS1
In Year 1 the children have been investigating the question “Which material is most absorbent”. The children were able to observe how different materials absorbed coloured water over time. Following the observations they were able to use some simple comparative scientific language to come to appropriate conclusions.
Stones and Bones - LKS1
In Year 3 the children have been learning about rocks and soils. Their learning has included how different types of rocks and fossils are formed. They conducted investigations by gathering information and writing scientific reports on fossils. Additionally, they developed their observational skills to explore how soil is formed through the process of abrasion.
Dissolving the Mystery - UKS2
In Year 5 the children conducted a fair test based on dissolving. Different classes had different enquiries. Some investigated the effect of temperature on the time it takes to dissolve solids, some the amount of stirs etc. As a class they discussed which variables would stay the same and which we would change to make it a fair test. They made predictions, conducted the experiment then came to a conclusion. They then discussed what changes we might make for next time to ensure accuracy.
