Early Engineers

The following photos demonstrate the use of testing different skills during the planning process to help support children when making appropriate design decisions to reflect on the suitability of the choice they have made on the user, purpose and function. This is an important part of the design process as it enables children to build upon their prior knowledge and skills as well as building resilience and knowledge that they can use when making.

Primitive Build, Dimensional Yields - EYFS

The Reception children have been using the magnetic polydron shapes to build 3D structures. The children have been testing placing different 2D shapes together in order to build houses, shops, and their very own Heronsgate Primary School. Children were able to consider which shape they should use for the various different parts of their build as well as consider what was successful and what to improve.

Axel-erated Learning - KS1

In Year 2 children tested different types of axles to find the most suitable for the user, purpose and function. The testing also enabled pupils the opportunity to explore methods of attaching the wheels and the axles together. This then helped children make better informed design choices during the designing and making process.

Threads of Friendship - LKS2

Year 4 children have been testing different types of stitching in order to select the most suitable to make a pair of gloves or mittens for a friend.  Children were able to practice threading the needle, tying a knot and various stitch types. Children were able to consider which would be most suitable for the purpose including noting that certain stitches would be more secure and better suited to keep out the cold.

Electrifying Education - UKS2

During a testing lesson in Year 5 children explored different types of switches. Children were able to consider which switch would be the most suitable to use in a nightlight for a small child. The testing lesson enables children to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each.
