Cool Coders
These images show how children have been developing their coding skills using our new LEGO Spike Essential kits, where children have learnt how to programme motors and sensors to make models achieve specific goals.
Building to Break Down Challenges - EYFS
As part of the general provision in Nursery, children can play and learn how to build using Duplo bricks. This involves many computing skills, such as breaking down problems into smaller steps (decomposition), as well as problem-solving and debugging when things don’t work as they expected. All of this serves as a foundation for coding in later years.
We’ve Got Robots - KS1
Year 2 have started using the LEGO Spike Essential kits, learning how to build models from the ‘Great Adventures’ unit. They worked as a class to follow the instructions step-by-step to build a robot to launch a boat. They discovered how to connect the hub to the iPad and use the software to create code to make the motor turn when the programme was run.
Technical Travellers - LKS2
Year 4 have explored using LEGO Spike Essential, building models from the ‘Happy Traveller’ unit. They built and programme a river ferry, taxi, helicopter, boat, bus and cable car. Children learnt how to use loops, motor and move commands, and wait for the colour sensor to detect a specific colour.
Budding Problem Busters - UKS2
Year 6 completed the LEGO Spike Essential unit ‘Quirky Creations’ in Summer 2. Working through the builds: ‘Good Morning Machine’ to Literary Randomiser’.
This unit developed pupils' computational thinking skills as they investigated methods for defining problems, brainstorming algorithms (solutions), and performing iterative testing and refinement of prototypes. They enhanced their problem-solving skills by designing and implementing solutions to problems under resource and performance constraints.
