Year 6 Week 1 23/3/20

<< Week 2

Friday 27th March – Day 5

Let’s start off by looking at the answers for yesterday’s reading and maths.

Maths

Task 1: Look back at yesterday’s learning and reflect on how you did, using the mark scheme that has been uploaded to showbie. If you made any mistakes, can you work out where your error might have been?

Task 2: You have been assigned a problem that focuses on multiplication and may require some trial and error. To do this, you can use pencil and paper or use the annotation tools on the blank page on Showbie below.

Aim: To work systematically (in an organised way) to solve the problem.

English

Task 1: Look back at yesterday’s learning and reflect on how you did, using the mark scheme that has been uploaded to showbie.

Task 2: You’ll be continuing on with a reading comprehension about Chapter 1. This time there are four inference questions and a deep thought extension where you need to decide your own point of view based on what you read.

Remember when inferring to think about what clues there are in the text to help you understand what is going on. For example, an author’s description of a character’s body language might help you to figure out how they might be feeling.

PSHCE focus: It has been a very interesting and different week for everyone. To end the week, we’d like you to focus on how well your week went, any difficulties you faced and thinking about how you overcame them.

We’d also like you to celebrate your successes and think about how amazing you’ve been learning in a different environment. Leave a comment in showbie to share your thoughts.

Thursday 26th March – Day 4

MATHS

You have been assigned a problem that focuses on the sum of numbers.

Aim: To work systematically (in an organised way) to solve the problem.

You can answer this by using paper or by logging on to Showbie and using the Showbie annotation tools.

English

This week you completed some writing tasks based on an extract from a book called ‘Cogheart’.

Today, you have a reading comprehension about Chapter 1. There are nine questions which focus on word meaning and fact retrieval.

Remember to use the reading strategies you have learnt for unknown words and looking for answers in the text.

Here are some helpful strategies:

  • Reading around the word
  • Replacing the word with another word
  • Looking for context clues such as helping words or examples given
  • Thinking about your own experience

You can use the annotation tools on Showbie to answer the questions or write them on paper.

Creative Curriculum

Music focus: Some people like to listen to music whilst they work, some don’t. Today’s tasks gets you to think about what you like and if there is any genre of music that helps you focus.

If you get the chance, use this time to share your favourite songs with family members. Leave a comment in showbie to share what you have discovered!

Day 1

English

Writing Task: Rewrite the chase scene from the Cogheart prologue, from the perspective of the attackers. Make sure you magpie or allude to some of Peter’s authorial choices.

Reading Task: Spend time reading for pleasure and include a comment in your reading record about your favourite part/topic so far.

Maths

Investigation Task: Add the digits of a number together and then multiply it by two. Continue doing this to identify a pattern.

An example is given for you below:

Creative Curriculum

History Task (FOCUS – Witch Trials): Using the image provided, “jump into the picture” and think about what might be going on.

Create speech bubbles for the main people in the image.

Day 2

English

Writing Task: Write a police report about the attack on Dragonfly (see Cogheart extract). Think about the features we have previously used for this text type.

Reading Task: Spend time reading for pleasure and include a comment in your reading record about your favourite character in the book so far or for non-fiction, write down one new fact you have learned.

Maths

Trial and Improvement Task: Read through the problem and using a systematic (organised) approach or trial and improvement (testing different ideas) work out the answer.

Creative Curriculum

Art Task (FOCUS – Sketching): In Art, we began sketching features of Gothic architecture.

Continue working on that skill by copying the textures shown in the task below.

Day 3

English

Writing Task: Predict what the letter that John gave to Malkin might say, and write this
letter to Lily. (See Cogheart extract below.)

Reading Task: Spend time reading for pleasure and include a comment in your reading record answering these statements

  • I know…
  • I think…
  • I wonder…

Maths

Generalising Task: Answer the questions about the Magic Square. You even have the opportunity to make your own.

Creative Curriculum

Science Task (FOCUS – Light Experiment):

  1. Fill a transparent box with water
  2. Shine the light through the water.
  3. Add a few drops of milk (or pinches of powdered milk) one at a time into the water until you can clearly see a beam of light.
  4. Look at the beam from the side of the box and have your partner look at the beam from the end of the tank.
  5. Tell each other what colour the water appears to be.
